Song Xuezhi, a twenty-year-old woman in 1979, awakens from a nightmare in which she is brutally murdered by tigers at a wildlife park. The tragedy stems from a conspiracy orchestrated by her husband, Zhou Weidong, and her own daughter, who had been secretly involved in a forbidden relationship with Zhou Weidong’s nephew. In the dream, Zhou Weidong and his supposed sister, Zhou Yuwei, reveal they are not blood-related and marry each other after Song Xuezhi’s death, leaving her family destitute and humiliated. Upon waking in a hospital bed, Song Xuezhi realizes she has returned to the past, before the events of her tragic life unfolded. She is still engaged to Zhou Weidong, a regiment commander she met when he saved her from a thief on a train. However, the nightmare has revealed Zhou Weidong’s true nature: he is a man who prioritizes his sister above all else, including his fiancée.

The core conflict arises immediately when Zhou Weidong demands Song Xuezhi apologize to Zhou Yuwei for allegedly pushing her into a river. Song Xuezhi, now aware of Zhou Yuwei’s manipulative tactics, refuses to submit. She confronts Zhou Weidong about his favoritism, revealing that he has already used their wedding savings and her dowry to pay for Zhou Yuwei’s son’s heart surgery. Zhou Yuwei, playing the victim, kneels and begs for Song Xuezhi’s forgiveness, further manipulating Zhou Weidong into defending her. Song Xuezhi, no longer willing to be a doormat, slaps Zhou Yuwei and then Zhou Weidong, shocking everyone present. She demands the return of her dowry and calls off the engagement, refusing to let Zhou Weidong’s family drain her resources.

A key turning point occurs when Song Xuezhi encounters Li Chengyuan, a lieutenant colonel and the chief of staff of the division, who saved her from drowning in the river the previous day. Zhou Weidong had ignored Song Xuezhi in the water to rescue Zhou Yuwei, but Li Chengyuan had performed CPR on Song Xuezhi. Realizing Li Chengyuan is Zhou Weidong’s superior, Song Xuezhi seeks his help to cancel her marriage application. Li Chengyuan, initially unaware of the full situation, agrees to assist her after learning that Zhou Weidong misused her dowry. He issues a note for her dowry money and helps withdraw the marriage report, effectively freeing Song Xuezhi from her engagement.

Following the breakup, Song Xuezhi faces the challenge of finding work and housing. She moves into a dilapidated rental room and sells her dowry furniture to a fellow military officer, Battalion Commander Wang, to recoup her losses. Meanwhile, rumors spread in the military compound about Zhou Weidong and Zhou Yuwei’s inappropriate relationship, fueled by Song Xuezhi’s deliberate hints. Zhou Weidong, furious at losing control, confronts Song Xuezhi as she moves her belongings, but she stands firm, exposing his hypocrisy and greed. Li Chengyuan continues to support Song Xuezhi, offering her protection and even suggesting he take responsibility for her after their accidental kiss during the rescue. However, Song Xuezhi declines, feeling unworthy of a man of his status. The story follows her journey toward independence as she seeks employment and navigates her new life, distancing herself from the toxic relationship with Zhou Weidong while gradually building a connection with the principled Li Chengyuan.
