And we get this flash — a man in a black raincoat, an iron wrench, rain dripping. What did she experience? What happened to her? The author doesn't tell us, and that silence is so much louder than any explanation would be. And Yang Qin catches her. Just catches her. He doesn't say anything dramatic, he doesn't make a grand gesture — he just wraps his arms around her and holds her while she falls apart. That's the most intimate moment in this entire chapter and it's so understated it destroys me. But here's what gets me even more: earlier in the chapter, Yang Qin is thinking about how he can't stop thinking about her even after a full day of work. He's lying awake at night hoping she'll break up with her partner. He knows it's pathetic. He knows he has no right. And he can't stop anyway. That's not love, that's obsession, and the book knows it and so does he. The emotional complexity here is insane — it's not a simple romance, it's messy and uncomfortable and real.

The bus station situation: Langcheng Station has already been demolished for reconstruction, so train services stopped and she has to take a bus to the provincial capital first. That's such a grounded, real-world detail that anchors the whole story in a specific time and place. You don't get that kind of specificity from just saying 'it was the late 80s.' Then there's the green train—the eight or nine hour sleeper ride from the provincial capital to Beijing. The whole journey feels tactile. The ticket seller shouting from the front of the bus. The crowded bus smelling unpleasant. The suitcase being shoved between legs. And then Beijing: the Sheng family car waiting at the station, the red envelopes from grandfather and uncle, the grandmother who specially tailored qipaos for her over several months, the aunt's jewelry box filled with pieces saved over years. I just finished this chapter and I need a minute because the pacing is absolutely masterful. It opens with Liang Heng confronting Wen Quhua at the sweet soup shop—quick, tense, establishes the Hong Kong connection and her secret past life mission. Then it pivots to the alley scene with Old He, which is longer and more detailed because it needs to show us exactly HOW she solved Yang Qin's problem. She didn't just call a lawyer and wait—she went out there herself, threatened the guy into confessing, and made sure it looked like he did it on his own. Then we cut to Yang Qin in the detention center getting the news, his confusion about who helped him, his discomfort about the lawyer's familiarity with Wen Quhua. This is where the author does something really clever—instead of resolving the conflict quickly, they make Yang Qin MORE confused and MORE guarded. He doesn't want her help. He doesn't want to owe her. And then the release scene, the sweet soup shop, the burned ingredients, the finger-scalding, the almost-confession, the interruption, the barbecue stall, the hospital visit, the empty rental room, the rejected business deal, the street smoking until 11 PM. Okay so let me just say this first: Yang Qin washing that dress. WASHING IT. Three times! At the sink! After he was literally about to throw it in the trash! What is WRONG with this man?? I need to talk about this moment because it's the single most revealing thing about him in this entire batch. He gets the dress, he walks back to the dorm, he's at the trash bin, he looks at it again—and instead of throwing it away, he goes to the sink. He washes a dress that costs hundreds of yuan because a stink bug touched it. A STINK BUG. And then he's standing there holding this small dress, "suddenly feeling that he had gone crazy." GONE CRAZY. He knows it. He knows exactly what he's doing is crazy. But he does it anyway. And Wen Quhua—she doesn't even know his name. She calls him "Master Yang" like he's some authority figure she's slightly annoyed by. She had zero patience for him after the bathhouse incident, and when she finally confronted him, she was straight-up cold: "Did I offend you?" And his response? "Do you need something?" With eyes that looked "wild and untamed, not someone easy to approach." But here's the thing that kills me: Aunt Zhu literally says it out loud. "Young people were just shy. Can we talk about how GOOD Wen Quhua sounds in this chapter? Her dialogue is sharp, controlled, and absolutely lethal. When Liang Heng tries to warn her off, she hits him with: "I asked a lawyer to solve my problem, not to solve me." That line is EVERYTHING. It's dismissive, it's independent, it's her drawing a line and making it crystal clear she doesn't need his protection or his family's help. And Liang Heng? He just laughs. He knows her. He says "She was still the same" and the more unchanged she is, the more certain he becomes she'll never fall for a laborer. Classic misread. He thinks he knows her but he has NO IDEA what she's actually capable of feeling. Then there's the scene with Old He where her dialogue shifts from cool and conversational to absolutely ruthless. "You said it yourself. It's your sister who's pregnant, not you." She's dissecting his entire defense strategy with surgical precision. And her threat at the end—"As for your whole family... well..."—she doesn't even finish the sentence. She lets him fill in the blanks himself. That's better writing than any explicit threat could be. Meanwhile Yang Qin's dialogue is this whole different energy. He's barely able to form complete thoughts around her. "Wen Quhua, you..." "What?" "Have you found your fiancée?" He can't even get to the real question. His dialogue is fragmented, hesitant, full of things left unsaid. And then there's Yang Tian who just YELLS from outside like a cartoon character and ruins everything. The contrast between Wen Quhua's razor-sharp dialogue and Yang Qin's stumbling, half-spoken words is honestly the romantic tension in this entire chapter. The author doesn't need grand declarations. The silence between Yang Qin's sentences says more than any love confession could.
