Wen Quhua, a woman from Hong Kong City, travels to the backward county town of Langcheng in 1988 with a singular mission. Having been reborn with knowledge of the future, she learns that a man named Yang Qin will commit a crime and go to prison within a year. Her task is to find him and guide him away from that dark path. To maintain a low profile while observing him, she rents a storefront next to a local barbecue shop and opens a sweet soup dessert business. The renovation is lavish, drawing the attention of locals, including Yang Qin, who works as a construction worker and small subcontractor. Yang Qin is a man of few words, dedicated to earning money to support his ailing grandmother. He is initially indifferent to the new tenant, viewing her as a delicate, wealthy outsider who will not last long in such a rough environment.
Wen Quhua struggles to adapt to the harsh living conditions, suffering from mosquito bites and allergic reactions to the new renovation materials in her shop. She is forced to move into a crude dormitory at the construction site, where she encounters Yang Qin regularly. Their interactions are marked by tension and misunderstanding. Yang Qin finds himself inexplicably drawn to her, despite his belief that she has a fiancé back in Hong Kong and that their worlds are too different. He acts with a mix of hostility and reluctant care, helping her with electrical issues, bringing her food, and escorting her to the bathhouse at night. Wen Quhua, unaware of his internal conflict, perceives his behavior as cold and dismissive, leading to a period of estrangement between them.
The narrative shifts dramatically when a catastrophic accident occurs at the construction site. Several workers fall from scaffolding, resulting in deaths and severe injuries. Xiao Xin, Yang Qin’s young subordinate and friend, is critically hurt. Because the construction site boss, Liu Jun, has fled the country with his mistress, the local authorities and the victims' families pressure Yang Qin to take the blame. The local power structure, connected to Liu Jun’s family, manipulates the situation to ensure Yang Qin becomes the scapegoat. Wen Quhua, realizing this is the pivotal moment that ruins Yang Qin’s life, springs into action. She uses her resources to call emergency vehicles, ensuring Xiao Xin receives timely medical treatment, which saves his leg and potentially alters the course of events.
Despite Wen Quhua’s efforts, the police arrive to arrest Yang Qin. The informant confirms that his registered name is actually Yang Qing, and the legal system is already rigged against him. Faced with the prospect of prison and the potential death of his grandmother due to his absence, Yang Qin considers confessing to the crime to secure compensation for the victims and protect his family. However, just as he is being interrogated, a lawyer named Liang Heng appears. Hired by Wen Quhua from Hong Kong, Liang Heng offers to defend Yang Qin, exposing the corruption and connections that threaten to destroy him. The story concludes with Yang Qin facing a critical choice: accept the easy path of imprisonment or fight for his freedom with the unexpected help of the woman he once dismissed. The dynamic between the two shifts from distant observers to active allies as they confront the entrenched local powers threatening Yang Qin’s future.
