Qin Yuan, an ordinary office worker from the modern world, wakes up to find herself transmigrated into the body of the cannon fodder villain in a power-fantasy novel titled The Path of Legends. The original character, the eldest daughter of the wealthy Qin family, is defined by her arrogance, foolishness, and malicious bullying of the male lead, Li Yue. In the novel's timeline, Li Yue rises from abject poverty to become a ruthless business tycoon, exacting severe revenge on those who wronged him, including sending the villainess to a compound in Southeast Asia where she dies insane. Qin Yuan realizes she has transmigrated on August 29th, three days before the start of high school, which is also the date of the inciting incident where Li Yue's leg is broken by Qin Yuan's clique.
Panic-stricken and lacking a system or cheat abilities, Qin Yuan rushes to stop the bullying. She arrives at the alley where Zhu Yunle, her clique leader, is about to smash Li Yue's leg with a baseball bat. Qin Yuan intervenes, shouting to stop the attack and using the threat of parental discovery to dissuade Zhu Yunle. Although she saves Li Yue from the fatal injury, his arm is still wounded, and the encounter leaves a lasting impression of cold disgust on the male lead. Qin Yuan arranges for the family driver to take Li Yue to the hospital and provides financial compensation for his medical expenses and destroyed study materials, which Li Yue accepts with suspicion.
As high school begins, Qin Yuan finds herself in the same class as Li Yue. She attempts to distance herself from Zhu Yunle and Guan Youyi, the cunning mastermind behind the bullying, and tries to build a new, friendly image among her classmates. Her efforts to reconcile with Li Yue are met with consistent rejection; he returns her gifts with notes saying "unnecessary" and maintains a cold, aloof demeanor. Qin Yuan interprets his silence as lingering hatred and fears her doom, while Li Yue views her sudden kindness as a strange, possibly deceptive, performance.
The narrative shifts when Qin Yuan decides to abandon her redemption plan, realizing that her wealthy family provides a comfortable life that makes the risk of offending the male lead unnecessary. She resolves to live freely and ignore Li Yue entirely. However, misunderstandings persist. When Guan Youyi approaches Qin Yuan under the guise of friendship, Qin Yuan coldly rebuffs her. Li Yue, observing from a distance, misinterprets the interaction, believing Qin Yuan is still aligned with her old clique and that her change in behavior is merely a new form of torment. The story concludes with Qin Yuan feeling defeated by Li Yue's unyielding resentment, while Li Yue remains watchful and suspicious, setting the stage for a complex dynamic where both characters struggle to navigate their new roles and hidden motivations.
