Ji Sheng is an eighteen-year-old college freshman whose life was irrevocably altered three years prior when she was struck by lightning. The incident occurred on the day she stole ten yuan from her father’s wallet to buy a graduation gift for a boy she admired. After recovering from a month-long coma, Ji Sheng discovered she had gained the ability to see and hear supernatural entities, including human souls, which ordinary people cannot perceive. Burdened by her mother’s early death and her father’s demanding job as a bus driver, she concealed her condition to avoid causing him distress or incurring medical expenses. As her college life began, the supernatural disturbances intensified, culminating in a terrifying encounter in her dormitory where a resentful female ghost attempted to force her to jump from a fifth-floor window.

Just as Ji Sheng was about to fall, she was caught by a mysterious, cold-handed man named Chang Sheng. He instructed her to visit the Supernatural Mystery Club in Zuixian Lou the following morning to meet someone named October, warning that her life depended on her compliance. Ji Sheng attended the meeting, where she encountered a talking black cat named Meng Bao and October, a man who revealed himself to be the Grim Reaper. October claimed that the lightning strike three years ago had transferred his powers to Ji Sheng, allowing her to survive despite her lifespan ending at that time. Consequently, he sought to kill her to reclaim his abilities, but Chang Sheng intervened, arguing that Ji Sheng could be more useful alive as a substitute for the Grim Reaper’s duties.

October agreed to spare Ji Sheng’s life on the condition that she work for him without pay until he found a way to restore his powers. Ji Sheng negotiated a salary of two thousand yuan and was tasked with cleaning the dilapidated Zuixian Lou building. After completing the chores, October detained her further, demanding she cook a meal and explaining the gravity of her new role. He revealed that because he could no longer perform his duties, approximately ten souls he had collected three years ago had escaped, becoming wandering ghosts that now roam the streets. Ji Sheng realized the female ghost in her dorm was one of these escaped souls who had mistaken her for the Grim Reaper.

October provided Ji Sheng with the Death Scythe, a small pendant necklace that possessed immense weight and power, instructing her to master its use. He warned her that failure to complete the backlog of soul-collecting tasks would result in her death, which would also endanger October’s own existence. After releasing her, Ji Sheng attempted to discard the scythe, but Chang Sheng reappeared, advising her to keep it. When he accidentally touched the scythe, he recoiled in pain, revealing that he, too, was not entirely human and could not interact with the Grim Reaper’s artifacts. He vanished shortly after, leaving Ji Sheng to grapple with her new reality.

Ji Sheng returned to her normal life, joining friends for a meal where she was asked to model for a photography club activity. However, the weight of her secret and the looming responsibility of becoming a substitute Grim Reaper hung over her. The story establishes a conflict between her desire for an ordinary existence and the supernatural obligations thrust upon her by the lightning strike. With Chang Sheng’s true nature still ambiguous and October’s temperamental demands pending, Ji Sheng must navigate a dangerous world of ghosts and spirits while maintaining her cover as a college student.
