Wei Yuexin is a low-level corporate employee and amateur video editor who accepts a high-paying job creating warning videos for an immersive reality show game based on apocalyptic novels. The project is funded by wealthy patrons who build massive game cities for hundreds of thousands of participants. Wei Yuexin’s first task involves a novel about an acid rain apocalypse, where the protagonist, Shi Feizhai, is a morally bankrupt shut-in who acquires a Pickup System. Shi Feizhai, who has just acquired his system, is caught off guard as his secret advantage is exposed to the world. He attempts to use a mind-control skill on a woman named Zhao Pingping but is interrupted by the Sky Screen. Meanwhile, the government of A City takes the warning seriously, initiating city-wide lockdowns and emergency preparations. The acid rain arrives as predicted, causing catastrophic damage to those unprepared and validating the Sky Screen’s authority. Wei Yuexin’s video garners millions of views, earning her significant income, which she uses to pay for her grandmother’s medical bills.
As the adaptation period begins, the Sky Screen reappears, revealing that an acid-resistant city exists but withholding its location. The narrative hints that the city’s builder, Shi Feizhai, obtained his power through unscrupulous means involving women. A special research group, led by an intelligent officer named Peng Lan, investigates the clues. They identify Shi Feizhai as the likely protagonist due to his criminal record for attempting to drug women and his strange ability to materialize objects. The police release Shi Feizhai under surveillance, using a female officer, Jiang Ying, to monitor him.
