Du Wanchun is a fifteen-year-old girl from Xiangtan Village who has long been mistreated by her stepmother, Liu Shi, and neglected by her father, Du Dajiang. After her mother’s death, she was forced into servitude, enduring starvation and cold. Although she appeared slow-witted, a fall that injured her head suddenly restored her mental clarity. When a proposal arrived for her to marry the son of Magistrate Li—a union that would elevate her status—Liu Shi conspired with Du Dajiang to swap Wanchun with her own daughter, Liu Lanzhi, who was believed to be the reincarnation of a blessed maiden according to a fortune-teller’s prophecy. To punish Wanchun, they arranged for her to marry into the Zhou family in Changliu Village, a household known for its extreme poverty and three disabled sons.
The Zhou family consists of Zhou Da Niang, a widow who had returned from the capital with her three sons after a tragic past. Her eldest son, Zhou Ruiyuan, is crippled; the second, Zhou Feng, is blind; and the youngest, Zhou Zhao, is deaf. The family lives in an earthen hut, bullied by neighbors and on the verge of starvation. Despite the dire circumstances, Wanchun accepts the marriage willingly. She recalls a childhood memory of seeing Zhou Ruiyuan, who had once shown her kindness by offering her food while fleeing with his mother. She believes that despite his physical condition, he is a man of noble character and potential.
Upon arriving at the Zhou household, Wanchun is welcomed warmly by Zhou Da Niang, who is touched by the girl’s grace and resilience. The marriage proceeds without ceremony due to Ruiyuan’s reluctance to bind a “foolish” girl to his fate, but Wanchun reassures him that she does not mind his condition. Their relationship begins to develop as they navigate their new life together. A significant turning point occurs when the family’s two sick ducks, which had been poisoned by their malicious neighbor Madam Jiang, not only survive but begin laying unusually large eggs. This event coincides with Zhou Zhao regaining his hearing, suggesting a miraculous recovery for the family.
The family’s fortunes begin to change as they reclaim their stolen land from Madam Jiang, who had occupied it for two years. Through a combination of Wanchun’s agricultural knowledge and a forged land deed recreated by Ruiyuan, they successfully retrieve the property. The land, though initially ruined, is restored with Wanchun’s help, and the crops recover rapidly. The discovery of a barren plot that suddenly yields delicious radishes further boosts their prospects. Wanchun and Ruiyuan decide to sell their produce in the county to generate income, marking the beginning of their economic independence.
As the story progresses, Wanchun and Ruiyuan grow closer, with Ruiyuan finding renewed purpose and pride through their partnership. He resolves to recover from his disability, inspired by Wanchun’s strength and optimism. Meanwhile, the antagonistic forces, including Madam Jiang and Wanchun’s stepfamily, continue to pose threats, but the Zhou family stands united against them. The narrative follows their journey from poverty and oppression toward stability and hope, highlighting themes of resilience, mutual support, and the transformative power of love and determination.
The early chapters establish a foundation for a story of rural life, family dynamics, and personal growth. Wanchun’s intelligence and capability contrast sharply with her previous reputation, allowing her to take charge of the household’s well-being. Ruiyuan’s hidden talents and noble background are gradually revealed, hinting at a larger narrative involving his past and potential future. The miraculous recoveries of the family members suggest elements of fantasy or fate, adding depth to their struggle against adversity. The story moves toward a resolution where the Zhou family overcomes their challenges, secures their livelihood, and builds a harmonious life together.
