Lin Wan, a skilled chef from the twenty-first century, finds herself transported to 1978 in the body of a young woman with the same name. The original Lin Wan was the daughter of a fallen capitalist family, sent to the countryside for re-education after her father died from a lack of medical care. Orphaned and desperate, she traveled to Su City to find her childhood betrothed, Zhao Zhiqiang, only to be betrayed by him and his new girlfriend, Su Qingxue. Su Qingxue drugged Lin Wan and attempted to ruin her reputation by forcing her into a compromising situation with strangers. However, Lin Wan escaped the trap and, in a feverish state, ended up spending the night with Gu Linchuan, a handsome and disciplined military officer who happened to be staying at the house.
Upon waking, Lin Wan realizes she has lost her introduction letter and money, leaving her stranded in an era where a woman’s chastity and documentation are vital for survival. Gu Linchuan, having recovered her lost items, proposes a contract marriage to satisfy his family’s pressure while providing Lin Wan with a stable home and income. Recognizing the practical benefits, Lin Wan agrees, setting conditions that include separate bedrooms and a monthly allowance. Their union is immediately tested when Gu Linchuan is called away on an urgent military assignment, leaving Lin Wan alone in the city with only a month before her introduction letter expires.
During his absence, Lin Wan navigates the harsh social landscape of 1978, utilizing her modern knowledge and culinary skills to survive. She discovers that Su Qingxue is still plotting against her, having purchased more of the same drug to use on Zhao Zhiqiang. Lin Wan intercepts the drug dealers, recruiting Lai Chunsheng, a kind-hearted butcher who owes them money, to help her expose Su Qingxue’s schemes. She orchestrates a public humiliation by having Lai Chunsheng place the drugged Zhao Zhiqiang and Su Qingxue naked in a sack at the entrance of their residential compound, ensuring the entire neighborhood witnesses their scandal.
Lin Wan then confronts the Zhao family to formally break the engagement. Despite Zhao Zhiqiang’s attempts to dismiss her as an unworthy rural girl, Lin Wan uses her knowledge of political terminology to frame his classist remarks as ideological misconduct, threatening his family’s social standing. The public scandal and political pressure force Zhao Zhiqiang to agree to the breakup. Lin Wan reclaims her family’s jade pendant, the betrothal token, and leaves the Zhao household with her dignity intact. She also reconnects with Old Master Zhao, the grandfather who had secretly helped her family years ago, revealing a deeper historical connection between their families.
As Lin Wan establishes her independence, she begins to work on rebuilding her life while waiting for Gu Linchuan’s return. Her pragmatic approach to marriage and survival contrasts with the traditional expectations of the era, earning her the respect of neighbors like Aunt Zhang. The story follows her transition from a vulnerable orphan to a resilient woman who refuses to be defined by her past or her political status. With Gu Linchuan’s return imminent, Lin Wan faces the challenge of navigating a genuine relationship with a man she initially married only for convenience, all while dealing with the lingering threats from Su Qingxue and the complexities of life in 1970s China.
