Then Jiang Zhaoying burns the hall down and suddenly it's 'treasonous — ten drownings wouldn't be enough!' The escalation is relentless. But what makes this work is that the author never lets us forget what everyone stands to lose. Madam Song isn't just angry — she's panicked because the ancestral hall is 'the backbone of the entire Song clan.' If the clan leaders demand answers, her position is ruined. Clan Leader Song is terrified that Madam Song will target his wife and children after twenty years of secret scheming collapses. Song Chengyu lost his feigned death pretext AND his chance to be intimate with Shen Yuefu because of a fire alarm. Everyone is one step away from losing everything. And Jiang Zhaoying? She's calculated every variable. She knew the aunts would hesitate because of their family misfortunes — she predicted it. This chapter is absolutely drowning in symbols and I can't stop thinking about what they mean. The Chastity Sand. Jiang Zhaoying rolls up her arm and points to it like it's evidence, like it's proof of her innocence. But the whole concept of chastity as a measurable, visible thing is itself a symbol of how women's bodies are treated as currency in this world. Her father immediately assumes she's been "wanton and shameless" because Song Chengyu's blood isn't pure—he tastes it himself, dramatically, like some kind of grotesque judge. The silver needle, the taste of blood. This is a world where a woman's virtue can be tested with a needle and a tongue, and where the test itself is absurd but treated as absolute truth. Then there's the Heart's Blood itself. Song Chengyu's blood—his life force—offered to save the Emperor. But whose blood is really being spilled here? Madam Song's dream. Clan Leader Song's loyalty. Mingji's childhood. All of it drained like blood from a body, sacrificed on the altar of ambition. And the candy Xu Zhiyan gives her—small, fragrant, sweet. In a world of poison (Madam Song poisoned her husband), fake death (Song Chengyu isn't really dead), and blood tests, that candy is the only real thing. It's sweetness without agenda. The whole place feels heavy with centuries of ungrateful devotion. And then the fire starts. Not with a bang but with a soft thud as a snow-white candle falls, wax spilling, the wick catching the carelessly placed spirit money. Smoke billowing. Mourning banners climbing into flames. Black smoke making it difficult to breathe. I could literally see this in my head like a film sequence. The visual contrast is devastating — pure white candle against dark incense smoke, the sacred tablets versus the chaos of servants screaming and fleeing. And Jiang Zhaoying standing in the center of it all, cold as ice, hurling an ancestral tablet at an old woman's head. The author also nails the soundscape: the crackling fire, the panicked shouts of 'Someone, come quickly!' repeated like a nightmare refrain, the soot-covered servants gasping 'Everything's burned up, there's nothing left inside.' Okay can we just talk about Xu Zhiyan for a second because I am absolutely losing my mind over this guy. The man is so painfully in love with Jiang Zhaoying it actually hurts to read. He's standing there watching Wei Jiuzhao fix her hair, his eyes full of that dull pain, and ALL he does is pluck a flower and tuck it into her hair himself. No grand confession, no dramatic declaration—just this tiny, trembling gesture that says everything. And then he says "No matter what method is used, you must secure a divorce!" like he's trying to convince himself more than her. He had already lost her once, he says. That line hit me like a truck. And then the Crown Prince reveal!! I literally gasped out loud. Jiang Zhaoying sees his back and whispers "It's him!" and suddenly ALL the pieces click into place. The bandits on the merchant ship, the cold voice saying "Throw them overboard," the ice-cold water. She's been carrying this trauma from her past life and now she has to face the man responsible while simultaneously trying to use him for her own schemes. The emotional whiplash of this scene is INSANE. She's trembling but she steadies herself and threatens him with those three letters. I cannot believe what I just read. How does she keep her composure?? Also Wei Jiuzhao—sweet, protective Wei Jiuzhao who's been cherishing her for over a decade. He divines for her twice and both times the hexagram reveals nothing yet feels inexplicably chilling. His concern is so genuine and it breaks my heart because he knows she's in danger and there's nothing he can do about it. This love triangle is giving me whiplash in the best way possible.

I need to talk about Madam Song because honestly she is the most tragic figure in this entire chapter and I'm still not over it. This woman spent TWENTY YEARS plotting, poisoning her own legitimate husband, raising another man's son as her own, all for a dream of being with Clan Leader Song openly. And what does he do when it matters? He chooses his legitimate wife and children. He chooses the clan. He chooses everything EXCEPT her. The moment that absolutely destroyed me was when she screams "Mingji, Qinghuan, save me!" and her own son—Song Mingji, the illegitimate child she treated like garbage, the one she kept grateful with scraps and hand-me-downs—kneels and tells her to stop making a scene. The text says it perfectly: "she had never imagined this dog would betray her." But let's be real, Madam Song trained him to be that dog. She raised him to be grateful for crumbs. And when the moment came, those crumbs weren't enough to stop him from choosing power. And Clan Leader Song? The man who supposedly loved her for two decades? He doesn't even hesitate. One look at his legitimate wife and children and he's like "fine, Chengyu dies, let's move on." The text describes his face: "wrinkles on his forehead suddenly deepened a few degrees. He seemed about to say something to Jiang Zhaoying but then remembered something." He remembered what? That Madam Song was never going to be enough? That his ambition always came first? Okay, I need to talk about this scene because my jaw is literally on the floor. Jiang Zhaoying just walked into a room where everyone is screaming at her to confess to killing her husband, and what does she do? She asks for a DIVORCE. Like, bro, you just got married two hours ago and your husband is dead on the bed and you're filing for divorce?? The audacity is unmatched and I am HERE FOR IT. But here's what really made me sit up straight — the Song family's plan was so elaborate. Song Chengyu faked his death, Madam Song orchestrated the whole public shaming, Song Mingji and Song Qinghuan were playing their roles as grieving siblings. They wanted her to kneel and swear she'd be a widow forever, serving them. Instead she flips the script entirely. And then the imperial edict arrives? Chef's kiss. The timing was so perfectly dramatic. The part that really got me though — when Jiang Zhaoying says "these in-laws are not worth keeping" and then casually steps aside when Madam Song threatens to throw herself at a pillar. She EXTENDED HER FOOT. She TRIPPED her. And then acted like nothing happened. This woman is not playing around at all. The plot is moving so fast and every turn is satisfying.
