Exchange Marriage in the '80s: The Dead Officer Has Returned

Qiao Wenwen transmigrates into the body of a tragic female supporting character in a period novel set in rural China during the early 1980s. In the original story, she was forced to marry a poor farmer named Qin Si, who later rose to political prominence, while her educated younger sister, Qiao Wanning, married a military officer, Lu Chengyi, only to become a widow and die of depression. Upon waking, Qiao Wenwen finds herself in a compromising situation with Lu Chengyi after Qiao Wanning drugs her and orchestrates the encounter to steal her intended husband. Instead of accepting her fate, Qiao Wenwen fights back, slapping her sister and revealing her knowledge of the plot. She realizes that Lu Chengyi is destined to die in action shortly after their wedding, but she decides to marry him anyway, viewing him as a handsome and capable partner worth enjoying while he lives.

Qiao Wenwen’s family, particularly her father Qiao Yuanshan and mother Song Mei, are depicted as abusive and exploitative, favoring her brother Qiao Hongyu and treating her as a servant. When the wedding arrangements proceed, Qiao Wenwen demands a substantial dowry and bride price, refusing to be sold off cheaply. She confronts her family with physical force, beating her brother and standing up to her parents, which shocks everyone, including Qiao Wanning, who had expected her sister to remain submissive. The wedding takes place quickly, and on the same day, Qiao Wenwen moves into the Lu family home, only to discover a household of parasites who have been living off Lu Chengyi’s military salary for years.

The core conflict shifts to Qiao Wenwen’s battle against the Lu family’s extended relatives, including the domineering Grandmother Lu and her greedy uncles and aunts. On her wedding night, she immediately demands the division of the family property, exposing the relatives’ theft of Lu Chengyi’s earnings and his father’s compensation money. She uses threats of legal action and public scandal, including revealing an affair involving the Third Aunt, to force the family into submission. Lu Chengyi, initially hesitant due to filial piety, is impressed by his wife’s decisiveness and supports her fully. The family is forced to divide their assets, leaving Qiao Wenwen, Lu Chengyi, his mother Gu Shuyi, and his intellectually disabled younger brother Lu Xun with minimal resources but their freedom.

After being effectively kicked out of the Lu family compound, the new couple rents a dilapidated courtyard at the village entrance. Qiao Wenwen takes charge of their new life, prioritizing Lu Xun’s medical treatment and her mother-in-law’s health, which she notices is failing. She establishes a firm boundary with her own family, refusing to let them exploit her dowry. Meanwhile, Qiao Wanning, now married to Qin Si, attempts to mock Qiao Wenwen’s humble living conditions but is physically intimidated and driven away. The story follows Qiao Wenwen’s determination to change the tragic fates of those around her, using her modern knowledge and fierce personality to protect her new family from the greed of both her birth family and her husband’s relatives.
