Her childhood friend Li Qin and Li Qin's brother Li Zhao lure her into the Forbidden Land under the pretense of a distress signal. Once there, Li Qin reveals a hidden curse that swaps their destinies. During the final stage of the tribulation, Li Zhao pierces Xi Ling with a cursed sword while Li Qin uses forbidden arts to steal Xi Ling's spiritual power and ascension. Xi Ling falls from the sky, her body shattered and her Qingluan wings scorched, while Li Qin ascends in her place, claiming the title of the youngest immortal.

On the brink of death, Xi Ling uses a secret possession art to merge her soul with a nearby raven-black parrot, escaping the search parties of Li Zhao and Li Qin. She is discovered by Xie Xuan Yu, a cold and immensely powerful young lord and the top disciple of the academy, who is known for his unparalleled sword dao. Xie Xuan Yu takes the parrot, whom he names Fengchu, back to his secluded residence. Unaware that the bird is actually Xi Ling, he treats it with a detached kindness, providing medicine for its injuries.
