Hua Shu, formerly the ruthless Empress Dowager of the Kingdom of Zhao, awakens in the body of the Empress of the Kingdom of Chu. The original host was known for her jealousy, lack of virtue, and scheming against the Emperor's favorite, Rong Zhaoyi, who is currently pregnant. Upon arrival, Hua Shu faces immediate accusation from Emperor Chu Ze, who storms into her bath chamber to confront her regarding the alleged harm to the imperial heir. Rather than fighting the charge directly, which lacks solid evidence, she adopts a strategy of feigned weakness and submission, offering to surrender the Phoenix Seal and relinquish control of the Six Palaces. This unexpected compliance confuses the Emperor, who had anticipated hysterical pleas, and allows Hua Shu to buy time while she assesses her precarious position.
Stripped of her authority, the Empress is forced to navigate a hostile harem where Consort De has been appointed to manage the inner court. Hua Shu realizes that her family, the powerful Hua clan, is also under scrutiny, and she instructs her father not to intervene, understanding that political entanglement could worsen her standing.
