In 1975 Western Moon, China, a woman named Zhang Xiyue is murdered by Wei Zhiguo and his mother Yang Guihua, who are plotting to steal her job at a clothing factory. Instead of dying, she transmigrates into the body of the original Zhang Xiyue, a frail girl who was the villainess in a novel titled The Poor Girl from the Seventies Strikes it Rich. The original character was killed because she was the main competitor for a coveted design position against Wei Zhiguo and the novel’s heroine, Yang Tiantian. Upon waking in a wooden cabin, Zhang Xiyue overhears the murderers planning to dump her body in the Sanmin River. A system binds to her, granting her strength pills and the ability to earn points by retaliating against those who anger her. She uses a strength pill to knock out Wei Zhiguo, stages her own survival by the river, and reveals the conspiracy to her family and the village.
Zhang Xiyue exposes Wei Zhiguo, Yang Guihua, and Yang Tiantian, who orchestrated the kidnapping. The village head and her family demand compensation. Yang Guihua loses her temporary job at the garment factory, which is transferred to Zhang Xiyue’s twin sister, Zhang Wenyue. Wei Zhiguo and Yang Tiantian are forced to work off a debt by earning ten work points daily for the Zhang family. Zhang Xiyue also secures the design job for herself after passing the recruitment exam. She then confronts Shen He, her former fiancé, who attempts to break off the engagement to marry a military officer’s daughter for social climbing. Zhang Xiyue publicly humiliates him, forces his family to repay years of borrowed goods and money, and slaps his sister, Shen Xiaoyun, for her cruelty.
As Zhang Xiyue settles into her new life, she learns that Yang Tiantian is a reborn individual who possesses a luck system and a spiritual space. The original Zhang Xiyue had died prematurely due to poor health, but the system offers Zhang Xiyue the chance to improve her physique through pills purchased with points. She discovers that Yang Tiantian stole the spiritual spring space from the original owner. Determined to survive and thrive, Zhang Xiyue focuses on reclaiming the luck system and destroying the advantages Yang Tiantian holds. She navigates family dynamics, including dealing with her biased grandmother and supporting her siblings, while building her career at the Red Star Garment Factory. The story follows her strategic moves to outmaneuver her enemies, protect her family, and establish herself as a powerful figure in the community, turning the tables on those who sought her destruction.
Zhang Xiyue’s rise is marked by her use of the system’s rewards, including cash and special items, to improve her living standards and health. She maintains a close bond with her family, particularly her protective mother and supportive siblings, who stand by her against external threats. The narrative highlights the social tensions of the era, such as the educated youth movement and the struggle for urban employment. Zhang Xiyue’s actions disrupt the original plot of the novel, altering the fates of Yang Tiantian and Shen He. She remains vigilant against Yang Tiantian’s schemes, knowing that the heroine is still a formidable opponent with supernatural advantages. The story progresses with Zhang Xiyue leveraging her new job and system abilities to secure her future, while simultaneously working to dismantle the power structures that Yang Tiantian relies on. Her journey is one of survival, revenge, and empowerment in a challenging historical setting.
