Leng Xue, an eighteen-year-old dual-S-rank ice ability user, dies in a post-apocalyptic world after avenging her fiancé Gu Beilu, who sacrificed himself to save her from zombies. Consumed by grief and vengeance, she freezes her abusive family and all the zombies before deliberately stopping her own heart to join him in death. She reaches the underworld and pleads with King Yama to be reincarnated into Gu Beilu's world. King Yama discovers that Leng Xue is the granddaughter of the goddess Nüwa and daughter of Lady Houtu, so he grants her request to transmigrate directly rather than reincarnate. She is sent to 1979 China to inhabit the body of Leng Zhaodi, an eighteen-year-old peasant girl who died after being locked in a hot woodshed by her parents for refusing to marry a mentally disabled man.
Upon waking in the woodshed, Leng Xue absorbs Leng Zhaodi's memories and learns of the family's cruelty. Her father Leng Daguì and mother Li Chunhua valued money over their daughter, having nearly drowned her as a baby and forced her into child labor. When the bride price negotiator Xu Zhonghong arrives demanding his money back because the bride is dead, Leng Xue sits up, shocking everyone. She confronts her parents, exposes their attempted murder, and demands the return of the bride price. Using her ice abilities secretly, she injures Li Chunhua and Leng Tianbao to force compliance. The villagers and brigade leader Tan Sanyong intervene. Leng Xue demands to sever all family ties, which is granted. She receives grain rations and moves into the educated youth compound.
On her first day, Leng Xue sees Gu Beilu arriving in a military truck. He is now called Bai Lu, a retired soldier who was injured in battle, blind in one eye, and uses a wheelchair. He has been disowned by his adoptive family after his cousin Bai Yan stole his military merit. Gu Beilu changes his name back to Gu Beilu and settles in the brigade next to Leng Xue. When Leng Xue tells him about their past life together, he does not believe her but is drawn to her. She plans to use the spiritual spring from the underworld to heal his injuries and restore his memories. The story follows Leng Xue's efforts to rebuild her life in 1979 while protecting and winning back the man she loves, navigating rural politics, family conflicts, and the challenges of living in a different era.
