Summary

Okay, so let's talk about Zhou Chenyang for a second because honestly he is the most frustrating character to watch right now. The man literally denied knowing about Xinzhitang in front of a bunch of eavesdropping bystanders just to protect his reputation. Think about that. His future wife's family business gets branded as a scam, his partner Jiang Xinrou gets dragged into it, and all he cares about is not looking like a gold digger. "Of course it has nothing to do with me. I will severely punish that swindler." He says this so gently too, like he's the victim here. Meanwhile Jiang Xinrou is sweating bullets trying to clear his name and he just walks away. And Lin Xiuyan? She's sitting there playing the innocent cousin while secretly planting seeds of doubt between them. The worst part is Lin Yunzhi actually thinks this is a GOOD thing—that his daughter is becoming more independent and less obsessed with Zhou Chenyang. Sir, your daughter is literally orchestrating the destruction of your daughter's engagement from the shadows and you're cheering for it. Who is the real manipulator in this family and why does everyone keep falling for it

I have to talk about the dialogue in this book because it is PERFECTION. Let's start with Ye Junfei because his lines are absolutely iconic. The man says things like "Miss, do you mind if I drink a little of your blood?" and "Don't worry, Miss. After I'm done drinking, I'll kill you. No one will ever know." with the same casual politeness you'd use when ordering coffee. The contrast between his elegant speech and his utterly deranged content is comedy gold. And his line "You're being naughty" when she tries to kill him? I wheezed. The fact that he treats her axe swing like a child misbehaving is both terrifying and hilarious. But what really impressed me is how each character has a distinct voice. Lin Xiuyan's internal monologue is sharp and sarcastic — she's constantly making snarky observations about the people around her. When she's talking to Zhou Chenyang, she switches to this fake, coy tone that's completely different from her inner voice. The author makes it clear when we're hearing her real thoughts versus her performed words. Zhou Chenyang's dialogue is perfectly slimy. "You stayed out all night, and I worried about you the entire time. How can you still laugh!" — this man is gaslighting her in real time and he sounds genuinely concerned. The author captured that specific brand of manipulative charm that abusers use, and it made me want to throw the book across the room. The banter between Lin Xiuyan and Ye Junfei is also surprisingly good. Even though they're technically enemies, there's a rhythm to their exchanges that feels natural. She's always one step ahead, and he's always amused by it. Their dialogue has this push-and-pull quality that's incredibly satisfying to read. One thing I'd note — some of the dialogue leans slightly toward the dramatic side, especially Ye Junfei's threats. But it works because the tone of the story is already heightened and stylized.

I've been thinking about the chicken hairpin Lin Xiuyan gives Jiang Xinrou and I can't stop going down a rabbit hole with this one. On the surface it's just a cheap gift, right? Something to keep her occupied while she slips out the back door. But what if it's symbolic of something deeper? A chicken—clucking, pecking, seemingly harmless but actually kind of chaotic. Isn't that exactly what Lin Xiuyan is? She's playing the innocent maiden, but underneath she's causing absolute mayhem. And then there's the Xinzhitang situation itself, which is basically a metaphor for everything in this story—appearances versus reality, the gap between what people say and what they mean. Zhou Chenyang says Xinzhitang has nothing to do with him, but everyone knows it does. Jiang Xinrou tries to explain but nobody listens. Lin Xiuyan pretends to be concerned but is actually pulling all the strings. The whole Linfu household runs on this kind of performative harmony. Even the ending with Ye Junfei appearing in Lin Xiuyan's study—white robe, gentle smile—is almost theatrical, like the universe itself is setting up a scene. "How about it? A pleasant surprise, isn't it?" Lin Yunzhi says this like he's handed his daughter something wonderful. But we know better. We know that smile is going to haunt her dreams.

But the author doesn't just rely on physical danger. The emotional stakes are what really got to me. Lin Xiuyan's past life — ten years of devotion to Zhou Chenyang, helping him build his power, giving him everything, only to be executed by his hand. The memory of feeling the executioner's blade fall is something the author uses as a haunting backdrop throughout. When she sees Zhou Chenyang alive and well in Chapter 2, the hatred that surges through her is palpable. The conflict with Ye Junfei is equally tense but in a different way. He's not just dangerous — he's unpredictable. One moment he's politely asking to drink her blood, the next he's pinning her to the ground. I need to talk about this ONE scene where Ye Junfei discovers Lin Xiuyan's hidden weapon cabinet and my jaw hit the floor. "Other young ladies' rooms are filled with jewelry and accessories, but your hobbies are a bit unusual!" This single line tells us SO MUCH about the world they live in. Girls her age are learning embroidery, collecting jewelry — and Lin Xiuyan? She's building crossbows. Modified ones. The Liannu she crafted can fire ten arrows in succession, accuracy and range far surpassing ordinary weapons. And Ye Junfei, who clearly knows weapons, is genuinely surprised. The image of this woman — reborn, traumatized, furious — sitting in her room surrounded by blueprints and mechanical parts instead of silk dresses and flower arrangements. It's such a powerful visual statement about who she is. In her past life, she used these skills to help Zhou Chenyang deal with the Pingnan Wangfu. She was a renowned weapons master before she died. And now, in this life, she hasn't even deployed them yet. The scene where she points the Liannu at Ye Junfei and he pulls the trigger — ten arrows embedding into the wall behind her — is cinematic. Absolutely cinematic. You can feel the tension, the dust, the fletching barely visible in the wood. Chapter 8 starts with Ye Junfei demanding she take responsibility, then escalates to him discovering her weapons, then Jiang Xinrou knocking at the door, then Ye Junfei whispering threats in her ear while Jiang Xinrou waits outside... and by Chapter 10, Lin Xiuyan has completely turned the tables on both Jiang Xinrou AND Zhou Chenyang in one brilliant public scene. The author knows exactly when to slow down and when to accelerate. The Liannu scene — ten arrows firing, Ye Junfei's expression changing — that's a moment that breathes. You feel the weight of it. But then Jiang Xinrou is sobbing outside the door, Lin Xiuyan is snapping "Then go die!" and suddenly we're in this chaotic, breathless sequence where three people are performing for each other through a wooden door. And the payoff? Chapter 10 is pure satisfaction. Lin Xiuyan publicly humiliates Jiang Xinrou by taking credit for her scheme, pins the blame on her, and even winks at her cousin while doing it. The shift from victim to strategist happens so smoothly across these chapters that you barely notice her transformation — until she's already won.
