Lu Wanzhi, a pragmatic wildlife rescue volunteer, is suddenly transported into a chaotic mash-up of novels after a space-time channel fluctuation. She inhabits the body of Lu Wanzhi, the vicious supporting character in the wealthy-family romance novel Where Does the Spoiled Wife Run: Mr. Gu's Beloved. Her mission is to follow main quests to restore the plot and return to her original world. Upon arrival, she learns that the male lead, Gu Tingxuan, and the female lead, Su Qiqi, have been transformed into cats—an Abyssinian and a calico, respectively. The world operates on absurd logic where humans interact with talking cats, and the original plot involves Gu Tingxuan keeping Su Qiqi as a substitute for his white moonlight, Lu Wanzhi.
Lu Wanzhi refuses to harm the cats, viewing them as animals in need of rescue rather than rivals in a love triangle. She discovers that the protagonists are actually two cats who communicate with her. Gu Tingxuan, the arrogant male lead, insists he only loves the real Lu Wanzhi, while Su Qiqi is merely a stand-in. Lu Wanzhi decides to facilitate their relationship to complete her mission efficiently. She intervenes when Gu Tingxuan attempts to cast Su Qiqi out into the snow, instead taking the calico cat in and caring for her. Through her practical and kind approach, she helps the two cats reconcile, completing the first main quest.
However, the plot deviates further. Gu Tingxuan decides to break off his engagement with Lu Wanzhi to be with Su Qiqi, angering the Gu family elders. Lu Wanzhi is tasked with pressuring Su Qiqi to leave, but she instead protects her from humiliation at an art museum opening. She rescues Su Qiqi from a dangerous situation involving a falling chandelier and confronts the bullies. This act of kindness leads Su Qiqi to break up with Gu Tingxuan, believing the class gap is too wide. Lu Wanzhi convinces Su Qiqi to stay with her in the abandoned Lu family villa.
Lu Wanzhi discovers she is nearly penniless, as the Lu family is bankrupt and she has only a small inheritance. Despite this, she finds a large sum left by her mother in a safe. She takes a part-time job at the Zhi'er Art Museum, run by Gu Zhiyan, Gu Tingxuan's socially anxious younger uncle. There, she encounters a side quest to meet the big villain, but Gu Zhiyan turns out to be a shy, introverted man rather than a malicious antagonist. Lu Wanzhi's interference causes the storyline to spiral further from its original path, introducing new characters like Lin Fei, a childhood friend of Su Qiqi who appears as a British Shorthair cat. The system struggles to keep up with the deviations, and Lu Wanzhi must navigate this increasingly chaotic world while trying to find a way home.
