Upon reaching Zanyang County, they encounter local corruption under County Magistrate Chen, a tyrant who exploits the villagers. Instead of fleeing further, Chu Chenyin and Fu Yanting devise a plan to turn the tables. They feign compliance with the Magistrate's demands, inviting him to a meal where they drug his wine and food. While the Magistrate and his guards are unconscious, the Fu family raids his granaries and warehouses, seizing massive stockpiles of rice, flour, and gold. They then steal horses and carriages, changing their identities to disguise their escape. The story concludes with the family continuing their journey north, well-supplied and armed, aiming to survive the impending natural disasters and rebuild their lives in the wilderness.
