Wen Ranran, a wealthy woman from modern times, wakes up transmigrated into a 1970s novel as a nameless female educated youth named Wen. The original character was merely a tool to highlight the heroine, Jiang Yue, and was destined to die from illness after fainting from heatstroke. Wen Ranran realizes she has become this disposable character and decides to alter her fate. She discovers that Jiang Yue is also reborn, retaining memories of a future where she marries the male lead, Zhou Musheng, and becomes wealthy. Jiang Yue intends to repeat her past mistakes, using Wen Ranran’s fainting as an excuse to skip farm work and meet Zhou Musheng at a pharmaceutical factory mixer.
Wen Ranran refuses to be a victim. When Jiang Yue attempts to manipulate her by claiming a carved wooden gourd pendant as a gift, Wen Ranran confronts her publicly, exposing Jiang Yue’s hypocrisy and demanding the item back. Jiang Yue, fearing the loss of the gourd which holds a spiritual secret in her previous life, reluctantly returns it. Wen Ranran discovers the gourd is a magical artifact containing a spiritual spring that can heal injuries and restore vitality. Using its powers, she recovers quickly and decides to attend the social mixer in the county town to find a suitable husband, aiming to escape the hardships of rural labor.
At the mixer, Wen Ranran meets Lu Shi’an, a deputy battalion commander who is instantly captivated by her beauty and grace. Unlike other men at the event, Lu Shi’an is direct, honest, and offers a life of respect and security. He proposes marriage immediately, and Wen Ranran accepts, recognizing him as a reliable partner. Meanwhile, Jiang Yue, having been denied entry to the factory due to her disheveled appearance and lack of a referral letter, sneaks into the premises through a pigsty. She is discovered by Lu Shi’an and arrested as a thief, covered in manure. Zhou Musheng, present at the scene, views her with disgust and fails to recognize her, severing their romantic connection before it begins.
Wen Ranran’s relationship with Lu Shi’an progresses rapidly. He visits her brigade and gains the approval of the local brigade leader’s family, particularly Aunt Liu, who had previously helped Wen Ranran. Wen Ranran also prevents a future tragedy by warning the brigade leader about children playing near a dangerous river, thereby saving the leader’s grandson from permanent brain damage. This act strengthens her standing in the community and undermines Jiang Yue’s influence, as the brigade leader no longer owes her a favor. Rumors spread in the village about Wen Ranran’s new boyfriend, with gossipers like Wang Dafen attempting to slander her reputation. However, Wen Ranran’s kindness and the support of her fellow educated youths, including Zhu Pingjuan, help counter these negative narratives.
As Wen Ranran prepares for her marriage, she navigates the complex social dynamics of the countryside with confidence and intelligence. She maintains a harmonious relationship with the other educated youths, sharing food and labor, while firmly rejecting Jiang Yue’s manipulative behavior. Lu Shi’an’s family in Beijing is initially skeptical of the arranged marriage but is won over by his sincerity and the detailed plans he presents. The story follows Wen Ranran as she builds a new life, leveraging her modern knowledge and the spiritual gourd to thrive in the 1970s, while Jiang Yue struggles with her failed plans and social isolation.
The narrative highlights the contrast between Wen Ranran’s proactive approach to her destiny and Jiang Yue’s reliance on past memories and manipulation. Wen Ranran’s marriage to Lu Shi’an represents not just a romantic union but a strategic alliance that secures her future. As the political and social landscape of the era shifts, Wen Ranran continues to support her new family and community, using her resources and abilities to improve their lives. The story concludes with Wen Ranran firmly established in her role as Lu Shi’an’s wife, having successfully rewritten the plot that was originally designed to make her a tragic footnote.
