Lu Dantao, a modern college student, transmigrates into a ten-million-word political intrigue novel, inhabiting the body of a minor female supporting character with only two lines of dialogue. The original host, the daughter of the Prefect of Jingzhao, was framed and executed by her former fiancé, Pei Di, who rose to power by betraying the Defender Duke. Having no memories of the host, Lu Dantao relies on detailed analysis essays she read before transmigrating to understand the plot. She identifies the male protagonist, Xue Yao, as her only path to survival and power. Xue Yao, the young son of the executed Defender Duke, is currently a Long Aotian archetype destined to rise from a humble beginning in the northwest to become emperor. Lu Dantao travels to Shouzhou, a remote border town, where she finds Xue Yao gravely wounded and abandoned in a mass grave after being ambushed by bandits. She drags him to Miaoshou Apothecary, a neutral zone run by the old physician Liu Jin, and pays exorbitant fees for his treatment.
Xue Yao wakes up two days later, initially hostile and suspicious. He reveals his true identity as Xue Yao, though he uses the alias Yan Yun to hide from Pei Di’s agents. Lu Dantao claims to be his ally, stating she is Pei Di’s enemy because he destroyed her family. Xue Yao, suspecting she is a pawn of Pei Di, tests her but ultimately decides to use her knowledge of Pei’s weaknesses. They form a tentative alliance, which Lu Dantao dubs the Avengers Alliance. While recovering, Xue Yao discovers that the apothecary is a front for the Black Wind Stronghold, a bandit group colluding with local corrupt officials. He overhears Liu Jin and his men discussing a scheme to capture an imperial envoy sent to suppress the bandits, a cover for Pei Di’s true identity. Xue Yao realizes Pei Di lured him to Shouzhou to eliminate him and seize the remnants of the Xue family army.
Lu Dantao accidentally eavesdrops on the bandits’ plan to capture her and Xue Yao. The bandits intend to drug them and hand them over to Lord Huang, a corrupt official. When Lu Dantao is discovered, she screams for Xue Yao to save her. Xue Yao intervenes, killing the bandits and Liu Jin after extracting information about the dungeon where Hu Ge’er, a former subordinate of the Xue family, is imprisoned. Lu Dantao, initially terrified, proves her value by using her lock-picking skills, a hobby from her previous life, to open the heavy iron lock of the government office dungeon. Xue Yao, impressed by her unexpected utility, allows her to accompany him.
Inside the dungeon, the atmosphere is oppressive and dark. Lu Dantao and Xue Yao descend into the depths, navigating narrow corridors lit by dim torches. The smell of decay and dampness fills the air. Xue Yao leads the way, his movements silent and precise, while Lu Dantao follows closely, trying to maintain her composure despite her fear. They are searching for Hu Ge’er, whose location is key to understanding the true strength of the Xue family remnants and Pei Di’s next move. The story ends with them deep within the dungeon, facing the unknown dangers that lie ahead in their quest for revenge and survival.
