The dialogue in this chapter is absolutely delicious and I need to highlight some of the best lines because they reveal so much about the characters. First, Wen Qizheng's commentary—'These two chicks, he wants them both'—this line is hilarious and devastating at the same time. He is stating the obvious while also pointing out the absurdity of Gu Jianshen's situation. The man is carrying one woman in his arms and another on his back and somehow still trying to save both. Wen Qizheng's voice is distinct—he is observant, slightly cynical, but not cruel. He watches Jiang Ning's plight with 'complex emotion' and wants to help but won't because of political calculations. That is a very specific character voice. Then there is Gu Jianshen's declaration: 'I only abide by the laws of our nation. As for the rules of the Minister's mansion, I am not a member of this household, so why should I follow them?' This is such a powerful line because it establishes his character immediately—he is a man of principle who refuses to be bound by corrupt local rules. His voice is commanding, direct, with an edge of danger. 'Now that I am taking these people with me, who dares stop me?'—that is the voice of someone who has fought wars and won. Jiang Ning's dialogue is sparse but impactful. 'Are you using me as armor?'—this shows her wit even in desperation. And that whispered 'It hurts so much. Why does it hurt so much?'—it is not performative like Jiang Yuan's cries. It is raw, genuine, vulnerable. Jiang Yuan's dialogue is all performance—'My Lord please save me—' with that trailing dash, the trembling lips, the calculated vulnerability. I have to talk about the East Courtyard bedroom scene because the description is SO specific and it tells us everything about Gu Jianshen's life without him saying a word. Let me paint this for you: bright candles, sandalwood fragrance mixed with alcohol, and this bed with bedding that was "personally sewn by the Elder Madam when Gu Jianshen was newly married; the mattress sheet, duvet cover, and pillowcases were all bright red and still looked ninety percent new." NINETY PERCENT NEW. Four years. He's never slept in that bed. The red bedding—traditionally for weddings and consummation—sits there untouched, almost ceremonial, like a relic from a life he never lived. And the dressing table? "A tiny bronze mirror—unlike a woman's vanity table, which usually featured a large, clear mirror and a spacious surface to hold cosmetic boxes for rouge and powder, as well as an array of jewelry boxes." It's sparse. Masculine. Empty. This man's entire living space is basically a hotel room someone forgot to unpack. Then there's the window scene with Wen Ya: "Bathed in moonlight, Wen Ya looked as though she had been coated with a layer of pristine holy light. The breeze gently fluttered her stray locks, lending her a subtle, fragile sense of beauty." This is cinematic. The author just stops the plot for a full aesthetic moment. And outside the window—the lawn, winter plum trees, the perimeter wall where Nanny Li is eavesdropping. Every element of the setting is doing double duty: it's beautiful, yes, but it's also a surveillance state. You can't even have a private moment in this mansion.

Okay so I need to talk about this moment where Jiang Ning falls from the tree and Gu Jianshen catches her, and then—get this—she literally hops out of his arms like he's some kind of venomous snake. She said it in the text: "as if he were a venomous snake or a fierce beast she needed to avoid at all costs." And the narrator literally tells us: "Oddly enough, Gu Jianshen felt his embrace suddenly turn a bit empty." I literally screamed. What a man. He goes through all that trouble, rides after her, saves her from crashing into a kid, catches her when she falls, and her first instinct is to scramble out of his grip like she just touched something contaminated. And then she runs straight into Wen Ya's arms and hugs her like her life depends on it. The contrast is everything. But here's what got me—the fact that Gu Jianshen's embrace felt "empty" afterward. That's not nothing. That's a man who didn't even realize he was holding onto something until it was gone. And Jiang Ning? She's so wrapped up in protecting her sister and surviving that she doesn't even register the romantic tension. She's over there thinking about Little Stone's life and conspiracy plots while he's over there having his moment ruined. Also the Wen Ya friendship? Jiang Ning chasing that carriage on foot like a maniac, risking her life, because she genuinely cares. And Wen Ya turning the carriage around because she had a bad feeling. That's real sisterhood right there. Not romantic love, but something just as powerful. The hot water scene too—"Drink a cup of hot water; it might help." Simple, modern, almost comedic, but it shows how these two women communicate. No grand declarations, just quiet support.

The narrative voice in this book is absolutely unhinged in the best possible way. Jiang Ning's internal monologue reads like someone who time-traveled but forgot to also time-travel their sense of dignity. 'Waaah, this is literally the road to the execution ground.' 'Waaah, she wanted to go home.' She says this shit like five times. And it's hilarious because it's so honest. Her performance in the study is a masterclass in comedic timing. She goes from terrified trembling to full-on sobbing, hugging Gu Jianshen's leg, delivering this elaborate confession-that-isn't-a-confession, and the narrator just watches her perform with deadpan observation. The line 'Confession brings leniency... can you please not resort to violence?' had me wheezing. She's treating a life-or-death interrogation like a customer service complaint. And then Gu Jianshen's actual dialogue—short, sharp, booming. 'Concubine Jiang, do you plead guilty?!' vs. his internal thoughts which are way softer. The contrast between his public voice (brass bell, scary general) and his private self (genuflecting to a window, sipping tea, noticing gold) creates this really layered sense of who he actually is versus who the world thinks he is. Handong's warnings are also great flavor: 'If you confess about Prince Jing, watch out for your whole family, young and old.' Dead serious, delivered like a grocery list. The dialogue here never takes itself seriously, which makes the actual stakes hit harder by contrast.

The text never directly connects it to the dream gold, but the parallel is screaming. His prosperity, his ability to help people, might be tied to something supernatural that he doesn't fully understand either. Then there's the white mist obscuring the Dream Man's face. Jiang Ning can see his body—'beautiful eight-pack abs and robust chest'—but never his face. Gu Jianshen's declaration 'I only abide by the laws of our nation' is the turning point—he refuses to play by their rules and that shifts the power dynamic. The escape sequence is where the pacing really shines. Fast, chaotic, action-packed. Gu Jianshen fighting while carrying two people, the servants pursuing, the physical exertion. And then—BAM. Jiang Ning falls. The pacing shifts from fast to suddenly still. We get that moment of impact, the numbness, the pain, the disbelief. And then the flashback. This is where the author makes a brilliant structural choice—the action pauses and we get context. The childhood memories, the history of manipulation, the suicide attempt.
