Chen Zhiyi, a genius heir to a traditional Chinese medicine family, dies in a plane crash and transmigrates into the body of a six-year-old girl in 1980s China. The original owner, also named Chen Zhiyi, was a malnourished and abused child in a patriarchal family. Her father, Zhao Zhiming, is a violent man who wishes to divorce her mother, Chen Shulan, to marry a wealthy city woman and take his favored son, Zhao Pengfei, with him. Upon waking to the scene of her mother being beaten, Chen Zhiyi uses her adult mind and knowledge of acupoints to incapacitate her father temporarily. She forces her mother to agree to the divorce, strategically negotiating to keep their home and revert her surname to Chen. The divorce is finalized, and Zhao Zhiming departs with his new partner and son.

Immediately after the divorce, the Zhao family matriarch and her son, Zhao Zhigang, attempt to seize the house, claiming it belongs to the Zhao family. Chen Zhiyi and her mother are outnumbered and threatened. At this critical moment, Zhou Zhenjiang, a high-ranking military deputy brigade commander, appears. He is revealed to be Chen Shulan’s first love from ten years prior, when they met during the educated youth movement. Their relationship was forcibly separated by Zhou’s family, leading to their respective marriages to other people. Zhou Zhenjiang physically repels the Zhao relatives and protects the mother and daughter, asserting his authority and status to deter further harassment.

The Zhao family, unwilling to accept defeat, hires two men to break into the home at night with the intent of ruining Chen Shulan’s reputation. Chen Zhiyi, using her medical knowledge, detects the scent of an aphrodisiac and wakes her mother. Zhou Zhenjiang, who had been keeping watch, captures the intruders. The scheme is traced back to Zhao Zhigang and his mother. Chen Shulan reports the incident to the police, resulting in the arrest and sentencing of the Zhao relatives. With the immediate threat neutralized and the house sold to a local family, Zhou Zhenjiang takes Chen Shulan and Chen Zhiyi back to his military compound in Beijing.

Life in the city presents new challenges. Zhou Zhenjiang introduces Chen Shulan to his family, but his mother, Qian Xiuying, vehemently rejects Chen Shulan due to her rural background and status as a divorced woman with a child. Zhou Zhenjiang stands firm, threatening to sever ties with his family if they do not accept Chen Shulan. Meanwhile, Chen Zhiyi encounters Zhou Zhenjiang’s adopted son, Zhou Lingyu, who suffers from mild autism. Chen Zhiyi observes that Lingyu is not entirely unresponsive and begins using her knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine and psychology to engage with him, attempting to help him integrate socially. She also deals with Zhou Zhenjiang’s nephews, who initially bully her but are rebuffed by her sharp wit.

As they settle into the military compound, Chen Zhiyi navigates her new identity as the daughter of a military leader while managing her mother’s integration into this new social circle. The story follows the mother and daughter’s journey from abuse and poverty to a more secure, albeit complex, life under Zhou Zhenjiang’s protection. Chen Zhiyi leverages her medical expertise to improve her family’s standing and care for those around her, including her new stepbrother. The narrative highlights the contrast between the harsh rural past and the structured, politically sensitive environment of the military compound, setting the stage for future conflicts and resolutions within the family and society.
