Lu Yunxi is a modern engineering student who transmigrates into the body of a sixteen-year-old girl in a fictional ancient world. For ten years after a war, she lives in poverty in Shitou Village, far from the capital. Her life changes when she hits her head and recovers her memories, realizing she has become Princess Caobao, a villainous supporting character in a novel she once read. In the original story, the princess is a lecherous, good-for-nothing noble who obsesses over the male lead, General Xie Zhiyuan, and ultimately causes the downfall of her family and kingdom. Lu Yunxi resolves to avoid this tragic fate and change her destiny.

Her family receives a letter from her father, Lu Tianguang, who disappeared ten years ago. He reveals that he has captured the capital, Jingdu, and declared himself emperor of the new Yongsheng Dynasty. Xie Zhiyuan arrives with an escort to bring the Lu family to the capital. Lu Yunxi learns that her father intends to marry her to Xie Zhiyuan, a union the general refuses. Remembering the novel, she knows this refusal triggers the chain of events leading to rebellion and ruin. She promises Xie Zhiyuan’s nephew, Xie Heng, that she will not marry the general, hoping to alter the plot.

During the journey to the capital, the group passes through Lincheng. Lu Yunxi visits a blacksmith shop and recognizes the exceptional quality of the ironwork, noting the potential for improving salt production in her hometown of Lingcheng, which once had salt wells. She encounters a mysterious nobleman named Huo Jinye, who buys a rare dagger and attempts to recruit the blacksmiths. Lu Yunxi identifies him as a key antagonist from the novel, the Fourth Prince of the Li Kingdom, who is obsessed with the female lead and responsible for her father’s death in the original story. She decides he must be captured to prevent future disasters.

Lu Yunxi devises a plan to ambush Huo Jinye using Molotov cocktails made from kerosene and alcohol. Xie Zhiyuan, initially skeptical, executes the plan with precision. The ambush succeeds, and Huo Jinye is captured along with his diplomatic letters and a list of traitors. The capture provides a significant political advantage for the Yongsheng Dynasty. Lu Yunxi also rescues the blacksmiths, including Deng Hu, who had refused to leave with Huo Jinye.

As they continue south, they learn that a bandit leader known as Red Beard is marching on Lingcheng. The local governor has fled, leaving the city defenseless. Lu Yunxi urges Xie Zhiyuan to divert to Lingcheng to defend the city. Xie Zhiyuan agrees to lead a small force ahead to organize the defense, buying time for the main group to take a safer, longer route. The story ends with the group facing the chaotic aftermath of war, while Lu Yunxi prepares to use her modern knowledge to reform salt production and navigate the treacherous political landscape of the new dynasty.
