Ringo Shirakawa is a university student with severe social anxiety who struggles with everyday interactions, particularly phone calls and public speaking. To cope, she joins her university's cafe club, where she is forced to participate in games with her peers. During one such gathering, Ringo loses a game and is sentenced to a punishment: confessing her romantic feelings to the next customer who enters the cafe. Terrified and humiliated, she approaches the entrance, praying for a female customer to spare her from embarrassment. Instead, a tall, bandaged young man named Osamu Dazai enters. Despite her internal panic, Ringo blurts out the confession. Dazai, amused by her distress, surprisingly agrees to date her, leaving Ringo bewildered and relieved that her punishment is complete.

Two months into their relationship, Ringo remains largely in the dark about Dazai's life. She knows he is two years younger than her, works, and avoids physical contact, yet she takes the relationship seriously. Dazai, an Executive of the Port Mafia, maintains a carefree and often dismissive attitude toward their dates, frequently arriving late or leaving early due to his dangerous job. Meanwhile, Dazai's relationship with his Port Mafia partner, Chuuya Nakahara, is characterized by constant bickering and mutual exasperation. Chuuya is deeply suspicious of Dazai's relationship with Ringo, believing Dazai must have tricked her into dating him. He views Ringo as too kind and naive for someone like Dazai. The story introduces further complexity when Dazai and Chuuya encounter Yamamoto during a meeting with Port Mafia leadership. Yamamoto's presence highlights the intersection of different mafia factions and hints at a larger, underlying tension between the organizations.

Ringo's life becomes further complicated when she meets Ranpo Edogawa, a brilliant but childlike detective from the Armed Detective Agency. After Ringo helps Ranpo after he forgets his wallet at a supermarket, he offers her a favor in return. Ranpo bluntly advises Ringo to break up with Dazai, recognizing the unhealthy dynamic of their relationship. This advice unsettles Ringo, who is already questioning whether Dazai truly cares for her. Her insecurity grows when Dazai casually mentions that dating her was his idea, yet shows little emotional investment in her feelings or well-being.

The story culminates in a series of encounters that force Ringo to confront the reality of her relationship with Dazai. She learns that Dazai's work involves dangerous mafia activities, and his partner Chuuya openly warns her about the risks.
