Song Shengsheng awakens in a police station cell, having been detained for attempting to elope with her childhood sweetheart without proper identification. She realizes she has transmigrated into the body of a cannon fodder supporting character from a novel she once read. In the original story, she abandoned her husband, Fu Cheng, an army officer, and ran away with another man, only to end up destitute and commit suicide. Her cousin, Zhao Xiaoning, who is also reborn, had been manipulating her in the dream timeline to drive her away from Fu Cheng, who would later become a powerful figure in the capital.
Fu Cheng, her husband of several years, arrives at the station to rescue her. He is tall, handsome, stern, and cold toward her. Song Shengsheng, terrified of repeating her doomed fate, immediately changes her behavior. She stops demanding a divorce, acts sweet and submissive, and clings to Fu Cheng, claiming she was merely tired and needed fresh air. Fu Cheng is suspicious of her sudden change but decides to play along, watching her closely to uncover her true motives.
Back home, Song Shengsheng begins to actively improve herself. She cooks meals, washes dishes, and shows genuine affection toward Fu Cheng and their four-year-old son, Fu Luochi. In the original story, she neglected her son, who grew up to become a brilliant scientist but remained emotionally distant. Determined to avoid that fate, she embraces her child warmly, surprising both Fu Cheng and their neighbors.
Her cousin Zhao Xiaoning visits, continuing her scheme to poison Song Shengsheng against Fu Cheng and encourage divorce. Song Shengsheng pretends to be swayed but secretly rejects her cousin's manipulations. She also cuts off financial support to her adoptive parents, who had exploited her for years, and refuses to give her cousin money or coupons.
Song Shengsheng discovers she is adopted and that her real uncle, a capitalist intellectual, is undergoing reform at a nearby farm. She resolves to visit him and learn about her biological parents. Meanwhile, Fu Cheng grows increasingly intrigued by her transformation. He notices her genuine efforts to be a better wife and mother, though he remains guarded, suspecting she may have ulterior motives.
As Fu Cheng prepares for a military mission, he orders his subordinates to keep watch over Song Shengsheng. She, however, is focused on studying to prepare for the upcoming college entrance exam, hoping to educate herself and strengthen her position. The story follows her struggle to rewrite her destiny, win her husband's affection, and protect her son from the tragic fate that awaited her in the original novel.
