A Joyful Month of Life

Zhao Panpan, a woman who survived severe depression with the help of her beloved dog Snowball, discovers she is pregnant and shares the news with her husband Zhang Liang and his family. The celebration is short-lived when Zhang Liang’s nephew Kele roughhouses with Snowball. Zhang Liang prioritizes his nephew’s feelings over his wife’s distress, allowing the child to harm the elderly dog. When Kele accidentally causes Zhao Panpan to fall and bleed, she is hospitalized with a threatened miscarriage. Demanding Snowball be brought to her, she is horrified to learn the dog has died from the abuse. In a fit of rage and grief, Zhao Panpan confronts Zhang Liang and his mother, Zhou Xiangping, who physically assaults her. Zhang Liang restrains her, enabling the violence. Zhao Panpan files a police report for intentional assault, refusing mediation despite pressure from officers and her own family to endure the abuse for the sake of the child.

The conflict escalates as Zhao Panpan’s father and extended family urge her to stay in the marriage, blaming her for being too sensitive and valuing the dog over family harmony. Simultaneously, Zhang Liang’s relatives launch a coordinated online campaign to smear Zhao Panpan’s reputation, labeling her a villain for seeking divorce and abortion. With the support of her friend Zhang Yanyan and lawyer Gu Chen, Zhao Panpan counters the harassment by releasing medical evidence and police records, turning public opinion in her favor. She decides to terminate the pregnancy, citing the toxic environment and her own traumatic upbringing as reasons she cannot provide a healthy life for a child. However, after a conversation with Zhang Yanyan about their shared history as abandoned children, Zhao Panpan changes her mind and chooses to keep the baby.

During the divorce proceedings, Zhang Liang’s family reveals a deeper scheme. They had tricked Zhao Panpan into transferring the marital home to Zhou Xiangping’s name under the guise of insurance paperwork. Furthermore, they produced a forged one-million-yuan IOU claiming Zhang Liang borrowed the money from his older brother Zhang Jun for household expenses. In the first trial, the court rules that while the divorce is granted, Zhao Panpan must assume half of the fabricated debt, leaving her with only 220,000 yuan from the sale of the house. Gu Chen advises an appeal, arguing the debt is fraudulent. Meanwhile, Zhang Liang discovers the extent of his family’s manipulation; his mother admits to spending his salary savings, and his brother reveals the IOU was a tool to seize Zhao Panpan’s assets. Zhang Liang realizes he has lost his wife, his child, his home, and his savings due to his blind loyalty to his family.

Zhang Liang attempts to apologize to Zhao Panpan, begging for reconciliation. Zhao Panpan rejects his plea, pointing out that his remorse stems from his own financial ruin rather than genuine love or accountability. She recognizes that his failure to protect her during the assault was a fundamental breach of trust that cannot be undone. The story concludes with Zhao Panpan pursuing the appeal to clear her name and recover her rightful assets, while Zhang Liang is left alone, facing the consequences of his choices. The narrative highlights Zhao Panpan’s journey from a victim of domestic and emotional abuse to an independent woman reclaiming her life and future.
