Meng Ying, a modern food blogger and agricultural graduate student, wakes up in 1980 China to find she has transmigrated into a melodramatic military romance novel. She now inhabits the body of Meng Ying, a beautiful country girl who shares her name. The original host had a privileged life as the wife of Lu Tingzhou, a regimental commander in the Northwest military district. For three years, Lu Tingzhou had sent half his stipend home, allowing the original host to live comfortably without working. However, driven by loneliness and village gossip, she impulsively wrote a letter demanding a divorce. Two days later, regretting her decision, she died of a sudden illness, leaving the letter already sent.
Upon realizing the situation, Meng Ying recognizes the absurdity of throwing away such a secure life. She learns that in the original story, the divorce is granted, leading to her poverty and death, while Lu Tingzhou marries a military doctor and lives happily. Determined to avoid this fate, Meng Ying decides to travel to the Northwest military base to stop the divorce and reclaim her status as an officer's wife. She visits her loving family in a neighboring village, who are shocked by her decision but ultimately supportive. Her mother gives her extra money for the journey, and her father and brother escort her to the train station.
After a grueling two-day train ride, Meng Ying arrives at Gansu-Ningxia Station. Immediately upon exiting, she witnesses a pickpocket targeting a woman who had previously helped her on the train. Meng Ying intervenes by creating a distraction, allowing the police to arrest the thief. In the chaos, Lu Tingzhou, who is present at the station, helps subdue the criminal. The two finally meet face-to face for the first time in three years. Lu Tingzhou is stern and reserved, initially surprised that she has come, but Meng Ying uses her charm and a feigned injury to convince him to carry her to his jeep. He reluctantly agrees, showing the first signs of softening toward her.
At the military base, Lu Tingzhou takes Meng Ying to their modest home. The tension between them is palpable; he is cold and distant, while she is playful and demanding. When she asks him to boil water for a bath, he initially refuses but quickly relents when she pretends to cry. Later, Meng Ying discovers he is writing the divorce report and breaks down in tears, accusing him of abandoning her. Lu Tingzhou, guilt-ridden by her emotional display and his own neglect over the past three years, apologizes and agrees to cancel the divorce. Meng Ying then declares her intention to stay at the base permanently, forcing Lu Tingzhou to accept her presence in his life.
As they begin to live together, their relationship slowly warms. Lu Tingzhou, though awkward and inexperienced with romance, begins to show care through small actions, such as buying her favorite foods, helping with household chores, and wiping mud from her face. Meng Ying, utilizing her knowledge from her previous life, improves their living conditions by cooking delicious meals, planting a vegetable garden, and creating skincare products. She also befriends their neighbor, Sister-in-law Liu, who provides her with fresh vegetables and companionship. Meanwhile, Lu Tingzhou’s subordinate, Chen Feng, and other soldiers express curiosity about the beautiful new wife, while a woman named Liang Wanyi from the Cultural Troupe harbors secret romantic feelings for Lu Tingzhou and views Meng Ying as a rival. The story follows their adjustment to married life in the harsh but beautiful Northwest environment, navigating social dynamics within the military compound as they build a future together.
