Xiao Yao is a modern woman who transmigrates into the body of a newborn infant in the Xiao family, a prestigious household headed by General Xiao Hu, a high-ranking military official. She is born as the daughter of Xiao Jingkang, a fourth-rank commissioner, and Tong Mingyu, the eldest daughter-in-law known for her competence and grace. Her birth is significant because she is the first legitimate granddaughter in the family, born alongside her twin brother, Xiao Jun, in the twelfth year of Tianyu. The General, who deeply regrets not having a daughter after his own sister was mistreated and died young, showers Xiao Yao with affection from the moment of her birth, naming her Xiao Yao, with the nickname Ping’an, meaning peace and safety. This favoritism creates a stark contrast with the treatment of his grandsons, particularly the energetic Xiao Jun and the younger Xiao Qi, who are often overlooked in comparison to the doted-upon girl.

The narrative follows Xiao Yao’s early childhood, highlighting the warm and harmonious atmosphere within the Elegant Garden, her parents’ residence. Her father, Xiao Jingkang, is portrayed as a loving and somewhat doting parent who prioritizes his daughter’s happiness, even rejecting marriage proposals from high-ranking officials to keep her close. Her mother, Tong Mingyu, manages the household with grace while balancing the dynamics between her sisters-in-law, Li Jiaoying and Yuan Yutong. Li Jiaoying, the second daughter-in-law, is initially anxious about her son’s future marriage arrangement but eventually embraces her affection for Xiao Yao. Yuan Yutong, the third daughter-in-law, is a spirited woman from a military family who returns home after a year-long absence and also develops a fondness for the clever and beautiful niece.

A critical turning point occurs when Xiao Yao, at nine months old, is accidentally crushed by her brothers during play. Xiao Qi, the youngest, falls onto her, followed by Xiao Jun, causing severe internal injuries. The incident leaves Xiao Yao unconscious and near death, prompting a frantic search for medical help. Doctor Zhao, a renowned physician, treats her with acupuncture and medicine, warning that full recovery may take years and suggesting the rare miracle doctor Lin You as a potential hope for complete healing. The family is devastated, and the servants responsible for her care are severely punished, with many sold or exiled. This event shifts the family’s dynamic, intensifying their protectiveness over Xiao Yao and highlighting the fragility of life within their privileged yet constrained world.

As Xiao Yao recovers, she navigates her new reality with a mature mind trapped in a child’s body. She observes the political and social undercurrents of the Xiao family, including the General’s impending return to the northern frontier and the arranged marriage alliance with the Fang merchant family, which is tied to the family’s history and gratitude. The story explores themes of gender expectations, familial love, and the challenges faced by women in a patriarchal society. Xiao Yao’s intelligence and awareness set her apart from other children, though she carefully masks her true nature to avoid suspicion. Her relationships with her siblings and extended family deepen, particularly her bond with her grandfather, who remains her staunchest supporter.

The narrative also delves into the broader family structure, including the Tong family’s visit during the New Year celebrations, where Xiao Yao’s charm and cleverness are evident even at a young age. The story concludes with Xiao Yao beginning to speak and walk, signaling her gradual emergence from the shadows of infancy into a more active role within the family. Her journey is one of adaptation and resilience, as she seeks to carve out a safe and fulfilling life in a world where her gender and status offer both protection and limitation. The overarching tension lies in balancing her modern consciousness with the traditional expectations of her new life, while navigating the complex web of family relationships and societal norms.

People reviews make no sense and it makes me doubt if they even read this novel. This is very similar to Tensei Slime Isekai. Just a flame instead of a Slime. If you like fast-paced novels read this. But people are ridiculous expecting a lot from only 40 chapters! You shouldn't judge when it's still the first arc! Unless It's a very trashy novel then I get it. But this one isn't that bad. MC is reincarnated in a very primitive world and he's decisive to kill to try to maintain some balance.
