Qin Nian, a top medical student in her previous life, dies from overwork after binge-reading a novel titled Sweet Second Marriage in the 70s. She transmigrates into the body of the original novel's vicious female antagonist, who shares her name. In the story, this Qin Nian is the wife of military officer Xie Zhengnian. The original owner despised her husband, refusing to live with him or his family for six years, and only slept with him twice, resulting in two children: a six-year-old son named Fantuan and a three-year-old daughter named Xiaobao. Driven by her cousin Qin Wan and old classmate Han Mingze, the original Qin Nian attempted to drown her own children to force a divorce. However, Qin Wan and Han Mingze betrayed her, drowning her instead and planning to steal her children and husband. Qin Nian wakes up in the middle of this tragedy, surrounded by villagers who believe her guilt.
Quickly assessing the situation, Qin Nian slaps Han Mingze for his slander and exposes the conspiracy. She reveals that Qin Wan and Han Mingze plotted to kill her to seize her husband and status. When Qin Wan feigns innocence and manipulates the children into believing she is their savior, Qin Nian counters by producing a train ticket and introduction letter that Qin Wan forged to take the children to the military base. Qin Nian further dismantles Qin Wan’s reputation by revealing she is pregnant with Han Mingze’s child, a fact confirmed by the village doctor. The villagers turn against Qin Wan, who flees with Han Mingze. Despite this victory, Qin Nian faces a deeper conflict: her own children, traumatized by their mother’s previous abuse, view her with hatred and fear. Fantuan refuses to trust her, and Xiaobao, who suffers from mild mental delays due to neglect, is terrified of her.
Determined to redeem herself, Qin Nian decides to take her children to the military base to live with Xie Zhengnian, hoping to rebuild her family. She discovers she possesses a magical spatial dimension within a jade pendant, containing a treasure pavilion with medical supplies, food, and a spirit spring. Using the spring water, she improves her health and prepares for the journey. On the train to Yangcheng, she encounters various adversaries, including Qi Yaoyao, a privileged woman who is an ally of the original Qin Wan. Qin Nian outsmarts Qi Yaoyao and defends herself and her children from human traffickers and robbers, earning the respect of fellow passengers and a military officer named Lin Guodong. Her son, initially skeptical, begins to see her genuine efforts to change, such as her clumsy but earnest attempts to learn domestic skills and her protective behavior during the attack.
Upon arriving at the Pengzhou Island military base, Qin Nian learns that Xie Zhengnian has been critically injured in a mission. He lies in a coma, and doctors doubt he will survive. Qin Nian visits him in the hospital, where she confronts Qi Yaoyao again, forcing her to apologize for knocking down Xiaobao. Qin Nian uses her medical knowledge and the advanced medicines from her spatial treasure pavilion to treat Xie Zhengnian, stabilizing his condition when conventional medicine fails. She resolves to stay by his side and protect their children, determined to rewrite the tragic fate of the original story. The narrative ends with Qin Nian standing by her husband’s bedside, ready to face the challenges of military life and heal the broken bonds within her family.
